My Secret Spot
I have gone back to this spot a total of three times now. Although the scenery has not changed, the many things going on around this spot have changed. The first time I went back to this spot I decided to take my dog. She had a great time running and playing fetch in the open field. Once she got some of her energy out we both sat down under a big tree for some shade and simply watched. It was very hot that day and I noticed that once again families had hung up their laundry to dry. I thought about how if I had the space to do this I would. It not only saves energy, your clothes have the fresh scent of the summer air. As we sat there, I noticed the same Asian man I had seen on my previous lookout. It looked as if he was on the phone this time and was pacing the sidewalk up and down talking to someone. This made me think of how tiny the family dorms must be, and he must always be going outside for a much needed break and time to speak on the phone alone. On that particular trip I didn’t see any other people that particular day. I think it was because I went around 5:00 p.m. and most people were thinking about dinner. Whether they had gone out for dinner or were cooking at home, most people were inside at this point. I did notice the slight smell of a cookout, although there was none in sight. I imagined some college kids down the road off Woodland Ave. grilling burgers and hotdogs for dinner.
The second time I visited a little earlier. I went around 12:30 p.m. and realized that this was the time to go! My little spot was bustling with activity. There was a playground that I have never seen used but was not filled with young kids screaming and playing. There were two moms sitting on the bench most likely discussing their husbands and children. There were about seven kids on the playground. It looked as if some of them had brought friends for the day. Also, their hair was wet and they had swimsuits on under their clothes. It seemed to me that that seemed like the perfect day; cooling off early in the morning at the pool, then going crazy on the playground. Another thing I noticed was that there were no clothes hanging up on the clothes line. Maybe it was too early in the day for the wife to of done laundry yet. I did not see the man that I normally see walking around or talking on his cell phone. He was perhaps in class or at work. Also, I did not bring my dog this time, but I did see another young college girl with her Beagle. This is a great place to come alone with your dog because of the size, yet the entire field is bordered by dorms and buildings. I saw college kids for the first time ever at this spot. They wore backpacks and it looked as if they were walking to/from class. It is probably because of the later times that I went I never saw college kids before. But during this time it was prime time for summer school kids to be walking to/from class.
On my third visit there was not much going on. It was an early Sunday morning around 10:30. I sat on the bench by the playground that was empty. I did see clothes on the clothes line, but no one anywhere near the dorms. Maybe because it was an early Sunday, with most college kids had a rough Saturday night, and most families going to church. I did hear the sound of a band practicing somewhere close. It wasn’t very loud but I could tell that they were fairly close. In all, I love this spot. There is just enough activity to make it fun, yet not too much for it to be enjoyable. I will continue to walk my dog here and let her run and play in the open yet small pretty little field.
