I went back to the medical library on Monday of this week. I sat in the same spot I did the previous week at a desk in front of the door way to the back room of the basement. I noticed the same musty smell the buzzing lights and the still silence. There was college age male in one of the study rooms of the back room of the basement. It is unusual to see people in these rooms. For the most part Monday’s observation was very similar to my first. I went back Tuesday in the morning instead of the previous afternoon visits. When I made my way down the aisles of books to the back room I could see a cleaning man standing in the middle of the back room. He Moved chairs around to reach all the dirty areas. He stood humming a song unaware of my presence. He hadn’t finished mopping by the time I was leaving. No other soul was in sight that morning. I went again to the library on Wednesday going back to my original time because it seemed to be busier around this time. Down the aisles towards the back room of the basement I started to notice a different smell… paint. I increased my pace; the entire back room was rearranged. My favorite super huge medical journals were missing. More tables where added to this already cramped room and the fresh paint covered the graffiti I had carved into the wall before I ever attended this college. All these observations made me realize how quickly things change and how little time we spend just taking it all in. I still think that the back room of the basement of the medical Library is my favorite place to study!
