Here's Benjamin Barber, our man of the day, on the Colbert Report in 2007. Stephen Colbert is doing his full-on faux-capitalist thing, but he's also offering some commentary on consumer culture. Specifically, Colbert questions what's wrong with marketing to children...using cartoon geckos to sell insurance, cartoon frogs to sell beer, and cartoon camels to sell cigarettes. Comments?

  2. The cocoa puffs was a joke because they were talking about cereal. Movies will do that with certain products as a kind of embedded advertisement.
As far as marketing to children goes..... I really don't care. We ultimately control what our children consume. There are other issues that arise here though. Some children are allowed uninhibited access to mass media either through lack of supervision or due to ignorance. Not everyone recognizes the effects of marketing.
