Spot Overlooked

My Favorite Spot on Campus

I chose this spot on campus because not only is it overlooked, but it is my favorite spot to go on campus. Every week I take my dog there because it is simply an open field for him to run and play, but there are never a lot of people around. When I went back to observe this spot I realized that the only people that really go there are the people that live in the dorms surrounding the area. What I learned from observing this area is that the dorms surrounding the area might be exchange student dorms because I saw a lot of Asian people and other ethnicities. I also noticed that there were families living in the dorms because I saw a lot of children because there is a playground there. So they may be the family dorms as well. I did not see a lot of if any college kids around, and there usually never are, which further leads me to believe they are the exchange student or family dorms. I think this spot is over looked because no one really knows about it. I have walked past it many times with my friends going to football or baseball games because I live in a house right past it. I have never seen any one else bring their dogs there and I love it being our little secret. There was not much else I noticed when observing the area. The main people I saw were older men and children. I did notice that the families hang their clothes up to dry outside which is interesting. It is a great place on campus to go to and everyone should try it.

BLOG ASSIGNMENT # 2

I chose to observe the memorial hall. I spent 20 mintues seeing a variety of happening in the afternooon. There were many students and visitors who want to take a picture with that building. Especially, I coould see three pretty asian girls leaping for the joy because they took a picture in the building. Also, two african people wathched the sign of the description in front of that hall. I heard noisy sound that people talked to each other out loud. Also, it looked like the students and the visitors were seemingly very happy and joyful. In addition, I could smell the fragrance the tree and flower near the hall.
I am the first semester students in here. So, all of landscapes in the University of Kentucky was somewhat unfamiliar with me. However, I became accustomed this building because I used to see this builidng on my way to the classroom, and my previous university in South Korea has a buiding like that. And so, nowadays, I could feel comfortable in here. It seemed like this building nearby specially make all people happy and peaceful. I also felt its atmosphere in this buidning for the 20 minture again.

Fine Arts

For this assignment I chose to sit on the leather chairs at the fine arts library to observe the area behind the building through the large glass windows. This view is one of my favorites on campus because there is a lot of activity and a nice view of the landscape around the student center and the Singletary center. This is a view I am fairly familiar with because i frequent this spot between classes during the school year. It is not nearly as busy in the Summer, as I observed the calmer side of campus. It is usually a very high traffic area, but today I pay close attention to the little things going on around me. I hear the sound of papers shuffling and computers typing. There is an older man closest to me reading his newspaper, crinkling it seemingly loud in comparison to the silence. He looked to be a professor. Through the glass I see the green grass in the background, with the one way road and the driveway up to the library in the forefront. I see a white community truck drive slowly down the black pavement that is lined with neon yellow caution paint. There are students drudging to class by themselves, while others are rushing to get back home. There are bikers zooming down the hill, most seem to be pretty confident in their ability to dodge people and traffic. I like this view because it is always changing. I know that I have been a part of that view many times because it is my regular route home, but it is funny to see everything from another perspective. There are things I may not notice if I were a part of this scenery, like the metal art that landscapes the view, which is relaxing to observe as you relax.

Blog Assignment #2

Kevin Klebeck

I chose to observe the area behind the campus library. There are multiple sidewalks that meet up behind it and a few benches along these sidewalks. I sat on one of the benches. From the bench I could see the Ingles and Blanding towers to my left. Straight ahead I could see the top of the hospital and the helicopter taking off circling around and landing. To my right of course was the back of the library. I went at 9:30 pm so it was nice and cool outside. The fireflies were circling around in the open field like dancing miniature light bulbs. I tried to look up at the stars but because of all the light pollution produced by Lexington, there wasn’t much to see. I was however able to locate the international space station, I know this because it was the brightest and only thing moving at a constant pace in the sky. While laying on the bench like a bum staring at the stars only a few people walked by. One group of two people leaving the library with what looked like to be heavy book bags, a person on their bike going to the library, and a barefooted man with a back pack walking through the grass field behind the library where I was sitting. He wasn’t homeless but the combination of him doing that and me laying on the bench looking at the stars leads me to believe that it is becoming more socially acceptable to act like a bum in public. I could hear the sound of the helicopter taking off in combination with all the cars passing by. Nature wise I could only here the sound of nocturnal bugs buzzing and chirping. The light gust of wind had a slight crisp to it and smelled a little like pine. Probably because of the pine tree that was right behind me. The field I was at concaved into the ground creating a bowl filled with small trees and bushes, it looked like something out of a trippy movie. It was actually quite peaceful due to the fact that it was late and there wasn’t that many people around. Instead of the 10 minutes recommended to us I actually stayed an hour without realizing it.

Blog Assignment # 2

I chose the medical library basement the farthest back room. I feel like it is often over looked. I have been studying here since my freshman year, and only one time have I seen someone studying in that room. The layout of the medical library basement is completely disorganized it seem as if they ran out of room so they knocked some walls out. Then set up book shelves and tables. This room has three study rooms, a few tables and several book shelves. It smells super musty. Most of the books haven't been touched in quite some time it appears by the dust gathering on top. There are these medical journals that are the size of a small table top, so impractical! As I sat out side the room I saw no one enter during the ten minutes I observed. Not a sound came from the room. I did not include a picture because I want you to all go see it for yourselves =)

I chose a place that I pass by everyday walking to class. I always thought it was really peaceful in this spot. It is a place where i am always excited about to get to on a hot day because of the breeze that comes through and the shade. I believe this is behind the Anderson Tower. There are trees and bushes on both sides of this path. On one side of the path, down a little hill, there are a lot of big boulders that are randomly placed. When I sat and observed this place, I saw many people go by. There were a lot of kids that seemed like they were on a tour or something with their pointing fingers and students rushing to class. Some avoided eye contact with the people they were about to pass, which i am told is a dead giv e away that it is a freshman. There are also three guys that were pushing a cart full of computer towers. It seemed like they were having a really hard time pushing it and keeping it in control, but they kept laughing. It seemed like they were maing the best of pushing that heavy cart in the heat. When i am here, i just smell trees and fresh, cool air. While i was here i heard birds and squirrels playing around and the wind rustling the leaves of the trees.

Blog Assignment 2

I made a video of the registration office door. It’s quite a location. It is filled with all of the noises that nobody really wants to pay attention to. There’s the constant opening and closing of doors. You can hear the creak of the bathroom door, followed by the slamming of a stall door, a brief silence (thank goodness), and then a toilet flushing. At random intervals there’s the sound of footsteps; sometimes it’s the flipping and flopping of sandals, other times it’s the clickity-clock of heels. Every once in a while the flipping and flopping comes in chorus with the chatter of a cell phone conversation then, there’s a pause in front of my door. The flip-flops flip and flop around, turning in circles and then the chorus breaks for a solo, ‘Could you please tell me where the registration office is, please?’ It’s amazing the amount of people who overlook the giant blue directional sign. I believe that this 10 minutes reinforced the mass disconnection I see everyday on campus. I tried walking on campus between classes with headphones in for one week, just to see what it was like. I felt invisible and vulnerable. How in the world could I fend off a ninja attack if I couldn’t hear the ninja coming from behind?!

Commons Market

For my observation place I chose a little bench next to commons market where I eat with the football team. The bench is a little one and its located directly under a tree. While I was at the bench I noticed a couple of things that were pretty cool. On the tree that the bench was under I first heard things moving around in it, To my surprise it was two squirrels playing. It seemed as if they didn’t even know I was there. It was also very very windy at the time. I also could hear a lot of birds chirping and leaves rustling. When I was sitting there I saw 5 different people walk by: one with his laundry, one with some food, two were holding hands, and the last one was on his bike. The smell that I got while I was there was just smooth clean air. I also noticed a lot of ants walking around at my feet as if they were racing. Another thing that I noticed was that there are 10 trash cans in like a 40 yard distance. I think that’s good for keeping our campus clean. Another cool thing is that the tree directly across from the bench was very tangled. The branches were all twisted together and it was interesting. That was about everything I saw while sitting at the bench.

Blog Assignment #2

The landscaping at U.K. is the basis of my observation. I make a short video clip of the pathway I chose to showcase is located between Science and Technology Student Computer Lab. and the College of Design buildings just across the street from the Chemistry and Physics building. I chose this pathway because as I walk down it the aroma of the flowers really is noticeable. The sidewalk is concrete covered with pea gravel. There is a blue painted cats paw print about half way down the path. From one end to the other is about 60 ft. long. On the Science and Technology building side there is a group of big hydrangeas’ these green leafed plants that have these huge white blooms. Down that same side of the pathway there are six trees that like some type of maple trees. And down low to the ground there are scrubs in between the tree trunks. The other side of the path way has a black lamp post that appears to be 16 ft. tall. The lamp post is surrounded by plants some are hostice and some type of lilies with purple flowers. The smell of lilac is present but I didn’t see any and I smell lavender too. In the ten minutes I have observed this spot: A bird hopped across the sidewalk about midway down, two differen
t people watched through there, and two different four-wheelers went through there. The birds are singing, the cadidids are make noise that I would normally find irriating and there is slight southwestern breeze that smell a little like rain. This spot seems like it would be shady all day but I wouldn’t know since I only pass through on my way to class in the mornings. I picked this spot because the landscape looks and smells great.

Fisher House Foundation

In light of the fact that we spent some time talking about donating to charities in class yesterday I thought I might take this opportunity to tell you about one that I personally support. Fisherhouse is an organization similar to Ronald McDonald House except that it is for the military and their families. Specifically right now it supports OEF/OIF wounded war vets. With the understanding that people recover quicker when they have their loved ones nearby, Fisher House was started to help those that didn't have the means to travel across the world or country to be with their loved while hospitalized.
I have included two links below. One gives details on Fisher House locations (projected and current). http://www.fisherhouse.org/aboutUs/fisherHouseFacts.pdf The other link is to the tax returns for last year which also has previous year's data on it. I didn't do the calculations but of about 23 mil raised 2 mil went to business related expenses. http://www.fisherhouse.org/aboutUs/irsReturn
Lastly, here's a link to all of the other information about the Fisher House. http://www.fisherhouse.org/aboutUs/fisherBio. I had the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time with some of the men and their families at Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Ft. Gordon, Ga. I can't imagine the relief it must have brought to these families not having to worry about the financial burden that comes from extended hotel stays. There are many that wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise.
I raise money for team Fisher House once a year for the Marine Corps Marathon. It makes me very happy to know that none of the money I raise is being spent on the team. All of our gifts come from sponsors. They are listed on the website.
If anyone would like to donate there is a link on the website for donations.

Blog assignment #1

Assignment #53
Give advice to yourself in the past.

Choose a particular age you have been, perhaps a time when you were particularly lost. Write out a list of practical advice to yourself at that age. Begin the list with this header: "Advice To Michelle Cambell at Sixteen" (only use your name and whatever age you want.) You must specify the age that you are giving yourself advice to!! Be very specific with your advice, for example, don't just say "Hold on to your heart," but instead say "Don't go out with Kevin, he will eventually cheat on you. Go out with Jake instead, he is actually cooler." If you need to use fake names go ahead. It is easy to say that everything happens for a reason, but take this opportunity to redirect yourself towards what you think might have been better. Sure everything turned out ok, but maybe you should have quit that job five years earlier, maybe you should have had children when you were 27, maybe you should have flossed, maybe you should have gone to the alternative high school, or not said that thing to your best friend. Tell yourself what to do in clear, specific language. Do not write an essay, make it in list form.

Advise to Katelyn Piniewski at age 17:

-Don't give all your time to Jimmy Gualda, as he will only screw you over for his ex girlfriend
-Charish your friends more and give them the love they deserve, because you will soon move far away from them
-Spend more time with your family. Period.
-Love your brother for all he is, continue to fight with him, but take him out more often and talk to him about his life, every aspect.
-BE CAREFUL AT PROM. Dont drink. It WILL end badly.
-Look at yourself and realize you are beautiful. YOU ARE NOT FAT!
-Stay thin and fit but DO NOT do it in an unhealthy way
-Take your college choice very seriously, don't pick it on a whim. ECU might not be the right choice, you may want to follow your Texas friends to UTSA with everyone else.
-Love yourself and your family, I cannot stress this enough. Don't be crabby when you are forced to go out with them. Take that time and hold on to it.
-Take more pictures of your family. You have enough of you and your friends.
-When your grandma comes to visit for graduation have meaningful conversations with her, this will be an important time for the two of you.
-And if I could give you one last piece of advice, I would tell you to NOT BE SO STUPID. Your life is NOT a fairytale in which everything is going to work out. There are really bad times to come and you need to be prepared.

Start a lecture series.

Get at least three people to lectures on the topic. You could assign the people an artist to research and then talk about. The lecture series should be held in an informal place that is easy to secure. Could be your living room, a park, anywhere.

Assignment #6 Make a poster of shadows.

You may take pictures of the shadows or simply trace them. These solid shapes should then be drawn on paper and colored in with a single color. You are not interested in anything but the shadow itself, and you are most interested in shadows that don't look anything like the objects that created them; abstract shapes.. Choose either brown, pink, light green, orange or white. Use only one of these colors. If you would prefer you may cut out the shapes from colored paper. The shadows should appear on the page in a grid formation, in rows. Treat this like a index of shadows rather than a work of abstract art. The finished report should include 10-20 shadows and should be pasted on (or drawn on) white paper of any size (even if, especially if, the color you chose for your shadows was white.) Do not label this poster in any way, except to write your name and the date on the back. My god these are going to be beautiful.

Blog Assignment 1

Assignment 70: Say Goodbye
This assignment said to say goodbye to many things. As a freshman in college, I have left a lot behind and need to put them to rest.

Goodbye high school.
Goodbye Big Bree my best friend back home in South Carolina.
Goodbye childhood.
Goodbye fear of making decisions.
Goodbye bad decisions made in haste.
Goodbye fears of being by myself.
Goodbye boredom of being out of practice.
Goodbye pain free days.
Goodbye by free time.
Goodbye to the people that tried to hold me back and were not real friends.
Goodbye to my family until I can see you again when I am bigger and better.
Goodbye to my video games and staying up to late.
Goodbye to the comforts of home for the next four years.
Goodbye to lazy summers off. I will really miss you and look forward to seeing you again.

Assignment 53: Give advice to yourself in the past.

Advice to Alex at age 17.
1) Learn how to say no to some of your so called "friends." It will save you money, you won't be as stressed out and you won't have guilt later on in life over some of the stupid things they'll lead you to do.
2) Just because someone made a reputation for you as a party person before you moved to Kentucky, that doesn't mean that you have to try to live up to that reputation. Don't try to impress others by drinking alcohol in school or other places.
3) Be true to yourself. It'll build your confidence and give you piece of mind. Living a lie is hell.
4) Join the "Versailles crowd." While you might think that they're boring and goody goodies at this point in time, later on in life they'll become truer freinds than some of the people that you hang out with now. You'll also find the girl of your dreams among them.
5) Don't stray away form the youth on the trip to Ashville, NC. It'll save you $300, and a lot of headache and grief.
6) Admit that your cousin has a drug addiction and don't just wish for it to go away. Tell someone about it while he's only smoking marijuana, and you won't have to carry a load of guilt later on in life when he starts abusing harder drugs.
7) Learn how to work academically. You're smart, but when college starts, memorizing information for the test an d forgetting it the week after just won't cut it. Start building the foundation for success in life by tackling your laziness right now.
8) Don't live in the past. Sure, life in Washington was good, you were one of the popular kids on the block, but that is the past. You'll never bring it back, so stop sulking and embrace what the future holds for you instead.
9) Play soccer your senior year. Otherwise you'll regret it for the rest of your life.
10) Stop running from God!! Seek him now with all your heart, strength, and soul. Your faith will end up being the foundation for your inner strength and will to that will help you keep on going throughout all the turbulences that life will swing at you.

Quiznos or Subway?

I thought Barber's answer to that question at the very end of the interview made no sense at all. Colbert asked him and he answered, "I guess a Subway man but maybe someone else has to really determine that." Who is he talkin about to determine his preference on subs? He seems too vague to me lookin at how he answers questions even on survey questions.

Here's Benjamin Barber, our man of the day, on the Colbert Report in 2007. Stephen Colbert is doing his full-on faux-capitalist thing, but he's also offering some commentary on consumer culture. Specifically, Colbert questions what's wrong with marketing to children...using cartoon geckos to sell insurance, cartoon frogs to sell beer, and cartoon camels to sell cigarettes. Comments?
